SUBARU telescope is being restored

The National Astronomical Observatory Hawaii observation point announced that the SUBARU telescope in the top of a mountain in the Mt. Mauna Kea on the Hawaii island broke down due to the earthquake of magnitude 6.7 that came off the coast of Hawaii last Sunday (October 15).

The SUBARU telescope is an optical-infrared telescope of the caliber 8.2 meters that the natural science research mechanism National Astronomical Observatory Hawaii observation point operates.

Enough accuracy has not gone out of the breakdown in driving part to turn the telescope to a target heavenly body due to the earthquake. I hear that there were no damages in a main body of the telescope and a main mirror etc. of the heart in the visual inspection.

As a result, usual operation of the telescope and general visitor's acceptance will be discontinued for the investigation and the repair of the telescope at the end of this month at least.
